New Member Jurying

NHAA membership is determined by a semi-annual jury process, which takes place in March and September.

The jurying for new members uses the following criteria:

  • Maturity of Artistic Concept - Originality and a mature, distinctive sytle
  • Mastery of the Medium - Technical skills in control and utilization
  • Composition - Competence in overall design, balance, use of color
  • Consistency in Artistic Concept - Artwork should demonstrate a consistency in quality and style
  • Presentation - Demonstration of high professional standards in matting and framing and the overall presentation of the work

Please note with regard to fine crafts, such as ceramics, fiber art, metals, glass and other mediums: The work presented will only be considered as fine art if it goes beyond the craft's utilitarian purposes. Your objective in producing the work is aimed at beauty rather than utility.

Membership Benefits

The New Hampshire Art Association is consistently working to enhance benefits in order to be a more valuable and useful facilitator not only in the promotion of its members’ art but also in its efforts to foster a better understanding and appreciation of the visual arts.

  • Fellowship and inspiration of artist members
  • Monthly receptions for artists the first Friday of every month in conjunction with Art ‘Round Town (5-8 pm)
  • Opportunities to exhibit artwork in locations throughout NH, including the NHAA’s Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery in downtown Portsmouth, that promotes NHAA members
  • Opportunities to participate in 3-4 open juried competitions throughout the year
  • Opportunity to vote and to voice your opinion at the annual meeting and eligibility to join the Board of Directors
  • Your website linked to the NHAA website
  • Opportunity to rent the East Gallery for a one-person show
  • Regular emails on plans, updates, activities, and reminders
  • Opportunities to receive awards in competitive exhibitions
  • Participation in the Membership Discount Program for art supplies, framing needs and museum visits where applicable
  • Participation in educational programming geared to aiding artists and the general public on technical aspects of visual art, as well as history and current topics surrounding today’s art

The NHAA seeks and encourages its members to volunteer 10 hours or more in some capacity to assist the Association with the many activities that occur throughout the year.  NHAA recognizes certain times are freer than others in an artist’s life.  Volunteering is a two-way street – something for everyone to give and to take.

The VOLUNTEER page of this website has a form outlining the many options available.  Please take a moment to go to that page and download the form and return it to the NHAA Office.
