Carol Whalen
Carol Whalen is a professional artist and educator whose work is primarily focused on landscapes where the natural world and human experience come together.
Resonating with Post-Impressionists Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard, Whalen’s representational landscapes are expressive and generally loaded with areas of thick paint. Her affinity with the later work of symbolist Odilon Redon is recently shifting Whalen in a more playful surrealism direction with the addition of symbolic inanimate objects in her landscapes.
Although Whalen enjoys watercolor and acrylics, especially when painting with students, her true love is mixing and laying down thick, impasto oil paint. She finds oil paint’s ability to transform from a transparent glaze to a pliable, clay-like body which allows her to sculpt her art as much as she paints it results in expressive possibilities not achievable with any other media.
